Class Announcement(s):

*If you miss class during our literature units, you need to write a paragraph summary of the reading assignment and email it to me. For excused absences you have two days for every day you're gone to make this up!

Writing Tips from Mrs. H:

1. Stay consistent with verb tense...if you start out using past tense verbs, then use past tense verbs throughout your essay!

2. Go beyond the obvious...include compelling details! I want to see your brain working!

3. Write in a way/give enough details so that someone who is unfamiliar with your topic understands it.

4. Watch those commas! Use the Dreaded Comma handout to help you with this.

5. Utilize topic sentences in your paragraphs. Each body paragraph should have some sort of topic sentence that unifies the entire paragraph. Use the paragraph worksheet for more help with structuring paragraphs.

**********

Dead Words: These words should NEVER be used in essays again!

Got, aint, thing, stuff, any texting lingo (u, r, lol), "so yeah", and try to stray from basic emotion words (happy, angry, sad, mad, etc).
